Chapter 11: The Drawer

"Maeve told me," I said. "Nan kept a book, and Maeve read it and told me tonight. It says what the woman in your head looks like. It says where she is."

Dominic gripped the wheel with both hands.

"Say it again."

"Your grandmother had a nurse. She saw your mother with the old woman's pills. Your mother put her in the boathouse at the lake house."

"That's insane."

"Then drive me to the lake house and open the door."

A truck passed us and shook the car.

He looked at the road for a long time.

"My mother wouldn't let anyone near that boathouse for four years," he said. "She said it had termites."

He put the car in gear.

We reached his parents' street at four in the morning.

He parked two houses away and killed the engine.

The Ferrantes' windows were dark. The wreath was still on the door.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Nina."

"I won't touch anything. I'll stand where you can see me."

He didn't argue.

He went around the side to the garage, and I followed ten steps behind with my broken hand against my chest.

He had a key on his ring.

The kitchen was warm and smelled of coffee and of the dish soap his mother used on everything.

We crossed the dining room without turning on a light.

The table was clear. The sideboard stood against the far wall.
