Chapter 16: Bail

The bail hearing was over almost before it began.

The judge looked at the stage video on a laptop, then at me, then at the young public defender who kept clearing his throat.

"Fifty thousand," she said. "She stays in the county. She surrenders her passport."

"I don't have a passport," I said.

"Then that part is easy."

A bondsman wanted five thousand in cash by four o'clock.

I had a hundred and forty dollars of Kari's concert money in a locker at the front desk.

I went back to the cell and sat on the bench, because it seemed to be the one thing I could do well.

At ten to four a guard unlocked the door.

"Somebody paid."

I walked out into the lobby with my shoelaces in a paper bag.

Dominic stood by the glass doors in the gray coat, holding a bank envelope.

He had not shaved. There was a bruise coming up along his jaw.

"How much was it?" I asked.

"Five."

"That was your savings."

"It was the money for the apartment." He shrugged. "I wasn't going to need an apartment."

"Why do you have a bruise?"

"My father. He doesn't like what I told the police." He touched his jaw and winced. "He came to the lake house this morning and stood in front of the boathouse door. He wouldn't let the patrol car near it. They went away."

"Dominic."

"I didn't hit him back. I want you to know I didn't."

I looked at the envelope and I looked at him.

I thought of the door on my hand.

"I'm not going to say thank you," I said.
