Chapter 21: Who Paid

The trustee confessed again at dawn, in a room with a recorder, and the district attorney left the charge against me exactly where it was.

My public defender read me the paperwork at ten, standing in the doorway of the trailer with his tie loose.

"I filed a motion to dismiss the murder count. The man who did it signed a statement. Three hundred donors watched him say it."

"And?"

"Denied. Before I'd finished my coffee."

"On what grounds?"

"The district attorney says you may have acted with him." He rubbed his eyes. "He says it as if he'd rather not."

"He ordered my arrest on live television. Last night he told the officer to leave me alone."

"I noticed."

"Why would he do that?"

"I don't know." He pulled a second sheet out of the folder. "But I called the court clerk about the broadcast. I wanted to see who'd asked to put cameras in the room for your hearing."

Kari leaned over the workbench.

"Who?"

"A freelance journalist. A production credit under a studio truck booked through Channel 4." He tapped the page. "The request was filed on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving."

I read the date twice.

"Before the ravioli."

"Before you were arrested. Before anyone knew your name." He looked uncomfortable. "Somebody booked a camera for your sentencing two days before you ate a bite."

Nobody spoke.

Dominic sat on the edge of the bunk with his elbows on his knees.
