Chapter 16: The Earrings

The detective had told me to walk away.

I meant to.

I got as far as the middle of the lobby.

Then I stopped, right in front of her.

"Those are my mother's earrings," I said.

I didn't say it quietly.

The officer at the front desk looked up from his screen. Two cops by the vending machine stopped talking.

Larissa's hand dropped from her ear.

"Bren." The soft voice. "Not here."

"You told me you lost them in a cab."

"I found them."

"When?"

"Does it matter?"

"You wore them to my mother's funeral. You said, 'So she's with me.'"

Her eyes filled up, right on time.

"She was with me. She still is. She loved me too, Bren. You don't get to have all of her."

The lawyer stepped between us with his briefcase.

"Ms. Pomeroy. My client isn't going to discuss anything with you. Please step aside."

"I'm not discussing anything with her," I said. "I'm asking for my earrings."

"Those are a gift," Larissa said.

"From who?"

"From your mother."

"My mother gave you a lot of things," I said. "She sewed you a dress for your eighth-grade dance because your mom forgot. She put you through two summers of driving school. She called you her other girl when she was dying. She did not give you her earrings."

One of the cops by the vending machine said, "Huh."

The desk officer had stopped pretending to type.

Larissa's chin trembled.

"You're doing this in a police station," she said. "You're doing it on purpose. You want everyone to think I'm a thief."

"I want my earrings."
