Chapter 26: The Last Hour
The detective looked at me from the terrace.
He lifted one shoulder. Your call.
"Five minutes," I said. "With the door open."
They put Kellan in the club's card room, off the terrace. Green felt tables. A dead fireplace. A painting of a horse.
An officer stood in the doorway with his back to us.
Kellan sat in a leather chair with his hands cuffed in front of him and one shoeless foot on the carpet.
I didn't sit.
"Okay," I said. "Talk."
He looked at his hands for a long time.
"I knew," he said. "From the start. In London she told me the trust was 'just sitting there.' I told myself it was her business."
"And the forty thousand."
"Dad said nobody would ever look. He said you never looked at anything." He swallowed. "He was right. You never did."
"I do now."
"I know."
He lifted his cuffed hands and rubbed his face with both of them at once.
"The detective says if I testify, about Dad and about Lari, it goes easier. I'm going to. All of it."
"Good."
"And the lot. My share. It goes back into the trust. Every dollar I can get out of it."
He laughed, without any sound. "Dad's going to hate that more than prison."
"Good," I said again.
He looked up at me.
His eyes were red, and his hair was wet with sweat from the run down the hill.
He looked like the boy who stood in the rain on Passyunk for my cannoli.
That boy had been real.
He just hadn't lasted.
"I kept something," Kellan said. "From your wedding. Our wedding."
He shifted in the chair and nodded at his jacket, hanging on the back of it.
"Inside pocket."
I reached in.
It was my ring.
Twenty-nine hundred dollars of meaning. The one I'd left on Larissa's peonies on the ballroom carpet.
"I picked it up after everybody left," he said. "I've had it on me every day since. I don't know why."
I turned it over in my fingers.
"Keep it, Bren," he said. "Please. It's yours. It's the one thing I ever bought you that I meant."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Can you sell it?"
He blinked.
"Sell it. Put it in the trust with the lot money."
I set it down on the green felt in front of him. "That's what it's for now."
"Bren."
"You don't get to keep anything of mine, Kellan. Not the money. Not the building. Not the ring."
