Chapter 30: The Ballroom
"Why?" I said again.
"Because I'm asking."
"That's not a reason."
"It's the only one I've got." He put his hands in his coat pockets. "Seven o'clock. Wear something warm. The ballroom's drafty."
"You know the ballroom's drafty?"
"I know every ballroom in this city," he said. "That one's the worst."
He wouldn't say anything else.
Not that night, and not for the next three weeks.
I asked Maggie. Maggie said, "Ask him," and then went and hid in the walk-in pantry until I left.
On the first Saturday in December, I took a cab downtown.
It was snowing a little. The hotel had wreaths on every door and a doorman in a long red coat.
He held the door for me.
"Ms. Pomeroy," he said, like he'd been told my name.
I walked across the lobby.
The marble. The big tree in the middle.
The front desk where I'd asked three times for my mother's veil to go in the safe storage.
I stopped at the bottom of the staircase to the mezzanine.
I could see the lounge from there. Low lights. The edge of a velvet couch.
