Chapter 7: Take It

Maggie hung up on the fish supplier mid-sentence.

The office got very quiet. Even the dryers downstairs seemed to stop.

Larissa walked in and sat down in the chair next to mine.

"Bren," she said softly. "I didn't know you'd be here."

"You smelled me from the stairs."

She laughed. A little silver laugh.

"Still so funny."

She turned to Wells and crossed her legs.

"I'll be honest. Everyone in Philadelphia saw how you run a wedding. The screen, the timing. It was flawless." She smiled. "I want that. For mine."

Wells hadn't moved.

"No," he said.

Larissa blinked.

"I haven't told you the budget."

"Don't need it."

"Two hundred and fifty guests. The Thurlow club on the Main Line. Kellan's father is paying." She took a checkbook out of her bag. "The deposit is thirty thousand. Today."

Maggie made a small noise in the corner.

Wells didn't look at her.

"We're booked."

"You're not booked." Larissa nodded at the whiteboard. "August twenty-second is blank."

"We're booked," Wells said, "for anything you'd want."

For a second, her expression turned vicious.

Then her eyes filled up.

"I know how this looks," she said, in the soft voice. "But I didn't plan to fall in love. Kellan and I tried so hard not to."

"And Bren, I know you're angry, but you humiliated me in front of everyone I know."

"You were on the poster," I said. "I thought you'd like that."

Maggie coughed into her elbow.

Larissa stood up. She tore out a check, signed it and laid it on Wells's desk anyway.

Thirty thousand dollars. Kellan's father's name printed at the top.

"Think about it," she said. "I'll call Monday."

At the door she turned back to me.

"Oh, Bren. I'm so sorry about your mom's veil. I heard the hotel threw it out."
