Chapter 18: The Register

Wren was home on Hallie's couch by noon, with her feet up on three cushions and strict instructions not to stand.

Jonas had slept in the hospital chair, and had gone home to shower, and was back by two with soup he had not made himself.

"Term three," Wren said, looking at the container.

"It's from the deli. I paid the deli. You can invoice me."

"Put it on the table."

He did, and then he stayed standing in the middle of Hallie's small living room, not sure where to put himself.

"You can sit," Hallie called from the kitchen. "On the floor. Like a dog."

Jonas sat in the armchair.

At four, there was a knock at the door.

Camille came in with her camel coat buttoned to the chin. Behind her stood an old man in a gray overcoat, holding a flat leather case in both hands.

"This is the notary," Camille said. "I found him in a lake town two hours north. He retired last year."

The old man did not look at Jonas. He looked at Wren.

"Ms. Hollister," he said. "I'm sorry to come to your friend's home. May I sit?"

Hallie brought him a kitchen chair and stood behind it with her arms crossed.

He set the case on his knees and opened it. Inside was a brown register, and a round brass stamp.

"I've stamped for Margaret Pryce for thirty-one years," he said. "She never once asked me to do anything wrong. That is the part I keep telling myself."

Nobody spoke.

"In March, she brought me a page with your name already signed on it," he said to Wren. "She asked me to date my stamp the second of October, five months back."
