Chapter 20: The Lamp Went Out
Wren took him by the front of his shirt and walked him backward until his knees met the edge of her bed.
The room above the bakery was small.
It had a sloped ceiling, a lamp with a yellow shade, and the smell of yeast coming up through the floor.
Jonas sat down hard. He looked up at her with his mouth already open.
"Tell me if I'm too heavy," she said. "I'm not the size I was."
"You're exactly the size you are."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I've got." His hands came up to her hips and stopped, waiting. "You're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, and I haven't seen all of you yet."
"Then take my cardigan off."
His fingers were clumsy on the buttons. She watched his face while he did it.
He got the last one undone and pushed the wool off her shoulders. It fell to the floor, and she heard him breathe in.
"Wren."
"Keep going."
He found the hem of her shirt and drew it up, slowly, over the curve of her stomach.
He didn't hurry past it. He laid his palm flat there, over the warm stretch of her, and held it.
The baby kicked once, hard, under his hand.
Jonas made a sound she had never heard from him, low and ragged and surprised.
"That's you," she said. "She's been waiting for you to be quiet."
"She?"
"I don't know. I think so. Don't tell Hallie."
He laughed into her stomach, and kissed her just under the navel, and then below that.
Wren's knees went. She put her hands in his hair and held on.
He got her shirt over her head and her bra undone, with a care that was almost painful.
