Chapter 14: Summer School

Under Brodie's message the replies were already coming in.

A laughing face.

Another one.

Big call, Brodes.

Playing house with who?

Damian put the phone face down on the sheet.

"He doesn't know anything," he said.

"He saw us in the corridor," Noah said.

"He saw a kiss."

"Damian."

Damian rubbed his face with both hands.

"He wants the armband. He's wanted it since second year. This is just him getting in early."

"So answer him."

"Not in a group chat."

"Then where?"

"In February. At training. I told you."

Damian picked the phone back up and turned it off.

Then he pulled Noah down against his chest and held him there, hard.

Noah could feel his heart going.

It didn't slow down for a long time.

The summer students came on the fifth of January.

Thirty of them, all eighteen and nineteen, all in the west wing.

They were doing a six-week chemistry bridging course and they had never lived away from home.

In the first week one of them set off the fire alarm making toast at three in the morning.

Another locked herself out of her room in a towel.
