Chapter 18: All Three

Anders opened the loft door and stood back.

"Come in, Zack."

Zack got up off the floor slowly, with the duffel, and stepped over the threshold.

Teddy shut the door behind them.

The three of them stood in the lamplight with the river black behind them.

"I didn't know where else to go," Zack said. "I quit the Madison apartment. I can finish the term online."

"You didn't have to."

"I couldn't stay there. I'm not asking for the allowance. I'm not asking for anything." His voice shook. "I only want to be where Ted is."

Anders looked at Teddy.

"What do you want?"

"Me?" Teddy let out a short laugh. "You're both asking me."

"Yes."

"You're really going to let me decide?"

"I'm not asking you to pick." Anders's voice was low and plain. "I am asking what you want, and I will not be angry at the answer."

Teddy looked at Zack.

Zack was standing with his shoulders rounded and his eyes on the floor, and his hands were opening and closing at his sides.

Then he looked at Anders.

Anders was standing very straight, with the silver at his temples gleaming, and his jaw locked, ready for a blow.

"Both," Teddy said.

The word fell between them.

"I want both of you. I've wanted him since I was fifteen, and I've wanted you since a kitchen in September, and I'm tired of lying about it." His voice cracked. "If either of you says no, I'll go. But I won't pick."
