Chapter 12: Four Four One Seven
Savannah's father walked away down the hall, and Declan did not move.
"What car did you wreck?" I asked.
"It's not important."
"He said it like a threat. Tell me."
"Not here."
He did not say another word until we were in his car.
It was the grey sedan, and he drove it down into the hotel's underground garage and parked it in his own space.
The engine ticked.
It had started to rain, finally, thin and cold on the ramp.
"In this life, five weeks before I woke up, I drove this car into a lamppost on Hennepin," he said. "My father had been dead two days. I'd been drinking since the funeral."
"Was anyone hurt?"
"Only me. Only the car."
I got out and walked around the front.
The left headlight was new.
The glass was clearer than the right one, and the housing still had the sheen of something just bolted on.
I looked at the plate.
Four, four, one, seven.
I put my hand flat on the hood.
The metal was cold and wet.
I thought of a road I had never seen in daylight, and a sound, and something very bright.
I had lain on my back in that rain, with my cheek on the asphalt, and looked at those four numbers.
I had read them because they were the only thing in front of my eyes.
"Solveig."
His voice came from a long way behind me.
"The text," I said. "You told me to stay off Alder Street. I never told anyone the name of that street."
"I know."
"How did you know it?"
He did not answer.
"You cried in the lobby at nine ten," I said. "You knew the siren on Ninth. You begged someone in your sleep to stay on the sidewalk."
