Chapter 5: Twenty-Second Floor

Declan did not lower his voice.

"Say that again, Warner. Louder. I think the bar missed it."

Warner's jaw worked.

He looked at the room, at the two tables of people who had put down their forks, and at the woman in the grey suit who had already stepped back.

"We're leaving," he said.

"Warner," Savannah whispered. "We just got here."

"We're leaving."

Savannah's father took the revised offer off my table and folded it in thirds without looking at me.

"The offer stands until the board meets," he said. "After that it doesn't."

"Then I'll see you at the board meeting," I said.

They went out through the revolving door one at a time.

Savannah looked back once from the sidewalk.

Her face was wet and perfectly composed, and I understood that she was already telling someone how cruel I had been.

I sat down.

My right hand hurt.

When I looked at it there was blood running down my wrist into my sleeve.

I had been gripping the water glass the whole time, and somewhere in the last five minutes it had broken in my palm.

"Don't move," Declan said.

"It's a glass."

"It's a cut. Let me look."

"You own a hotel. Don't you have people for this?"

"I have eleven," he said. "They're all in the kitchen, and I'm not asking them."

He took my wrist in one hand and turned it to the light.

His hands were warm and dry, and the callus at the base of his thumb scraped my skin.

It was an ordinary touch.

I stopped breathing anyway.

"You'll need a bandage," he said. "My suite has a kit. It's on the twenty-second floor, behind a locked elevator, and I'll stay in the sitting room the whole time."
