Chapter 2: The Courier's Card
Britt wheedles money, gave away Maeve's snacks, and shows a courier's card proving the deliveries went to the old family house.
Britt came home that night glowing, and I was already waiting at the kitchen table.
She stopped humming the second she saw my face.
"Your dot disappeared today," she said. "I called you four times."
"I turned off location sharing," I said. "I'm twenty-eight. I wanted privacy."
Her eyes flicked over me, and then she let it go with a bright little laugh.
She had spent the whole afternoon in Declan's apartment, and she wanted me to ask about it.
"Maeve," she said, dropping into the chair across from me. "Hypothetically. If I saved Declan's family, do you think he would fall in love with me?"
"No," I said.
Her smile cracked at the edges.
"That's not true! He'll definitely fall for me!"
She leaned across the table and narrowed her eyes.
"You like him too. Admit it. But you're two years older than him, so don't even think about it."
I did not answer.
I was ordering the last of my supplies on my phone, and I kept my thumb moving.
She had killed me once, and I was not going to hand her a second chance.
"Hey," she said, sweet again. "Do you have any money left? Can you lend me a few thousand? I want snacks."
"No."
"What do you mean no?"
"I'm broke. I just bought a new refrigerator."
Her voice shot up into a shriek.
"Why would you buy a refrigerator?"
I frowned at her. "I wanted one. Is that a problem?"
She froze, then smoothed her face over.
"Oh, no reason! I was just curious, hehe."
She stood and patted my shoulder.
"Also, I hope you don't mind, but I gave the snacks from your room to the old people on our floor. They have it so rough. You're not mad, are you?"
She beamed up at me, waiting to be praised.
I looked at her bright, innocent face, and the last bit of warmth I had left for her went out.
She had come back from the dead with the one power she had always wanted.
Her first act was to give away the food in my room.
If I hadn't been reborn, if I hadn't had a system, I would have starved when the rains came.
In the last life, when I refused to help Declan's family, she had secretly handed them a third of our food.
All I had been able to do was lock the door.
It was clear now. To my sister, I was worth less than a man who had never done one thing for her.
"It's fine," I said.
"Hehe! I knew you wouldn't be mad over something so small!"
She hooked her arm through mine.
I took my arm back. "I'm tired. I'm going to bed."
She followed me into the hall, still chattering about Declan's smile.
Then she stopped at the entry table and picked up a small white card.
"Oh, I almost forgot," she said brightly. "A courier left this in the mailbox. It's for you."
I felt my stomach tighten.
I had told every company to deliver straight to the old family house.
One of them had still sent a card here, to the apartment, because it was the billing address.
Britt turned the card in her fingers, and she read it out loud.
"Delivery completed. Twelve boxes. Left at the Dunning farmhouse, Pine Hollow Road."
She tilted her head.
"That's Grandma's house. Nobody has lived there in years. Why would you send twelve boxes to a ghost town?"
"It's cheaper to store things there," I said.
"A freezer? A generator? Beds?"
I stared at her.
"The courier wrote the list on the back," she said, and turned the card over.
I had not thought about the back.
"It's for my new place," I said. "I'm thinking of moving out in the spring."
"Without me?" Her eyes went wide and wet.
"You'll have Declan," I said.
She laughed too fast.
"True," she said. "You're right. I will."
She handed me the card and let her fingers brush mine.
Her eyes were sharp over the smile.
"I'll come with you tomorrow," she said. "To see the house. I miss it."
"I'm working tomorrow."
"I'll come after work. You can't say no to your favorite sister."
I walked into my room and shut the door.
I stood in the dark with the card in my hand.
My sister had never once cared where I stored a box.
She was not looking at the card. She was looking for me.
So I made my choice before I turned on the light.
I would leave for the house before she woke up.
