Chapter 21: The Gift
Britt looked down at me, and she laughed.
It was a thin, wild, delighted laugh.
"Look at you," she said. "Look at you, Maeve."
"I'm looking," I said. "Are you?"
She knelt so close that her hair swung across the shelf.
"You're a bug," she said. "You're a little bug on a porch."
"And you're a murderer on a floor with forty hungry people about to come through that door."
Her smile slipped.
"They won't hurt me."
"They'll tear you apart. Listen."
The shouts from the hall were louder now.
I heard Declan's mother calling for the axe.
"You have one way out of this," I said. "I'm it."
She sat back on her heels.
I walked to the edge of the porch rail and stood with my hands on my hips, a woman one centimeter tall giving orders to the girl who had thrown her off a roof.
"You will put me back to my full size in front of every person in this building," I said. "In the lobby, in daylight, with all of them watching. You'll call it a gift, and you'll say you made it with love."
"Why would I do that?"
"Because I have the recording of what you said at my door on the first night of the rain."
Her face went gray.
"I have it in three places," I went on. "One of them is the building's own screen system, and the man holding your attackers back has the keys to it."
"Finnegan," she whispered.
"He'll play it on every screen in the lobby if I tell him to. Or you can do it my way, and I'll keep it in a drawer."
