The penthouse windows had gone black hours ago, and we had never once turned on a lamp.
Nobody moved for a full breath.
Four men in black jackets stood in a line behind Rufus, and every one of them looked at the ceiling.
I pulled the blanket over both of us.
It was a stupid gesture, and I made it anyway.
"Get out," I said.
"Ms. Haskett." Rufus smiled at the foot of the bed. "You're welcome to stay in it. I'd only ask that Margot dress."
"The board is waiting, as I said. Every director is in the Kestrel lobby, and I've called in the staff."
"It's eleven at night."
"Emergencies keep their own hours."
Margot sat up beside me.
She held the sheet to her chest with one hand, and her voice, when it came, was the dry one from the boardroom.
"You could have called."
"I did, for a week. You were hard to reach."
He looked past her at the second figure on the bed, the unit with my face lying neatly under the blanket.
"Bring that," he said.
