Margot came down the mezzanine stairs one step at a time.

Four hundred people watched her do it.

Nobody spoke, and no one lifted a phone.

She crossed the white marble to the middle of the lobby, to the spot where I had stood in my coat with a box.

She turned to face them, and she did not use the microphone.

"My name is Margot Ketteridge," she said. "I was the chief executive of this company until a week ago."

"Four years ago I stood on that mezzanine and watched two guards walk my partner out of this room."

"Her name was Wynn Haskett. She had built the skin in your hands, and she was carrying her things in a cardboard box."

"I had signed the paper that sent her out the door."

"I wasn't. I was afraid of one man, and I let him take the person who made this place."

"I looked at her, and she looked at me, and I did not come down."

She turned her head, and her grey eyes found me at the foot of the stage.

"Wynn, I am sorry."

"I have said it to a machine for ninety nights. I am saying it now where you can see my face."
