My Sister Faked Blindness, So I Destroyed Them All novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Day It Began
Keeva dies in a ditch while her sister marries her fiancé, wakes in her own living room a year earlier, and says yes to the contract that killed her.
The whole kingdom watched my sister marry my fiancé, and I watched it on a cracked phone while I died in a ditch.
The royal broadcast showed Dahlia in white silk and dark glasses, smiling toward the cameras.
The announcer called her the bravest daughter in the kingdom.
Nobody was within a mile of me.
The wolfsbane burns on my back had stopped healing months ago.
It all began the afternoon Dahlia vanished from the mall in the capital.
She told everyone she had screamed for help through our mindlink, the silent voice wolves share.
She said I heard her and cut the link on purpose.
I never heard anything.
She said traffickers kept her for three days.
She came home in dark glasses and said they had destroyed her eyes.
My parents and my brother decided I was guilty before she finished crying.
Then the princess chose me for her royal botanical academy.
Dahlia wept that I had stolen what she could never see again.
My parents locked me in the punishment room, and my brother Tobias filed a complaint with the Crown.
The Crown struck my name from the academy.
Later, the Luna of the Westmoor Pack praised the greenhouses I ran and arranged my engagement to her son Elias.
Dahlia cried again, and Elias tore up our contract to hold her instead.
My father gave me to a laborer named Bram Tolland as punishment.
Bram beat me every day with a belt soaked in wolfsbane, so my wolf could not heal me.
At the very end, the Moon Goddess showed me the truth.
There had been no kidnapping and no blindness.
Dahlia had paid for all of it.
Then the Moon Goddess sent me back.
I opened my eyes in our living room, on the seventh day after Dahlia came home blind.
Dahlia sat on the sofa with a steel hairpin pressed into her own palm.
"It's all my fault," she said softly. "I'm useless."
Mom screamed and wrenched the pin out of her hand.
"I can't see the roses in the royal greenhouse," Dahlia said. "Of course I'm not fit for Princess Isabelle's gala."
"Keeva should go instead. She has the eyes I lost."
Mom turned on me, white with fury.
"How could you do this to her?"
"It isn't Keeva's fault, Mom," Dahlia said. "I promise. Please don't be angry with her."
She reached out and found my hand on the first try.
I had held that hand every night of my first life, wishing she would forgive me for something I never did.
My father stood in the doorway.
Tobias leaned beside him with his arms crossed.
Everyone in the room was waiting for me to cry.
I had spent a whole life crying in this room.
My phone sat in my pocket, and I pressed record without taking it out.
"I won't apologize," I said.
Mom gasped.
"But I can fix this," I said. "Princess Isabelle keeps the best royal healers in the kingdom at her gala."
"I'll ask her to examine your eyes herself, Dahlia."
Dahlia's hand went tight around mine.
"No," she said. "Please. I don't want to trouble a princess."
She said it a breath too quickly, and her voice trembled in all the right places.
Every night since she came home, Dahlia had walked the porch alone in the dark.
She refused every guide and said the quiet helped her heal.
Nobody had ever asked what she did out there.
"It's no trouble," I said. "The princess would be glad to help someone so brave."
"Enough!" my father roared.
Rainer Thorburn, Alpha of the Northvale Pack, crossed the room in three strides.
He did not look at Dahlia.
He looked at me.
"You severed your sister's mindlink and left her to traffickers," he said. "Now you torment her with false hope."
"I did not sever anything," I said.
"Pack law is clear," he said. "A she-wolf who harms her own sister is sent to the lower farms."
I knew what came next, because I had heard it once before.
"You will be mated to Bram Tolland by contract," my father said. "At dawn."
Tobias laughed under his breath.
"The laborer who broke a foreman's jaw. Fitting."
"Good," Mom said, and she turned her back on me to hold Dahlia.
Over Mom's shoulder, Dahlia's dark glasses stayed pointed at the floor.
In my first life, I fought this sentence for a month, and it killed me.
Bram Tolland was the name I had screamed in the dark more times than I could count.
I looked at my father and my brother and my mother, and I understood that arguing was the one thing they wanted from me.
So I said yes.
I would walk into that cabin with my eyes open and my phone recording, and I would find out what really happened to me.
