Chapter 19: The Treaty Is Withdrawn
My father said, "I don't remember that."
His voice was hoarse and small, and the whole greenhouse heard it.
Bram let go of my hand and stepped into the aisle.
Every head turned.
"She cleaned your grain stores," he said. "Twelve years. She was a gray-haired woman with a limp, and she split her hand on a sack of seed."
"I have fifty workers," my father said. "I cannot recall every one."
"No," Bram said. "I know you can't."
He did not shout.
He stood very straight, with his scarred hands hanging open, and looked at the Alpha who had let his mother die.
"I don't want your sorrow," he said. "I want a Healer on the lower farms every night of the year, paid by your house."
My father opened his mouth and shut it again.
The Princess lifted a hand to her herald.
"Let it be entered into the record," she said quietly. "Every word, and the Healer's post with it. The Crown will see it staffed."
A rough cheer went up from the lower farmers at the back, and the guards did not stop it.
Bram turned and walked back to me.
His hand found mine again, and it was shaking.
I held it hard.
Across the aisle, in the Westmoor row, a woman rose.
The Luna of Westmoor was tall and silver-haired and dressed in dark green.
She had not said a word since the gala began.
"Your Highness," she said. "A moment, please."
"Luna of Westmoor," said the Princess.
"The ransom for the kidnapped girl was paid in coin," the Luna said. "Fifty thousand, delivered to a florist's address in the capital. It was Westmoor money."
My stomach dropped.
I had not known that.
"My son," the Luna said, "told me the family of Northvale had been too poor to pay, and that the Crown would not help, and that a good ally should."
