Chapter 4: The Warrant

I stepped off the porch and into the middle of the yard.

Bram came out after me, and the guards took a step toward him.

"Not here," I said, loud enough to carry. "Not in the farm yard."

Doors opened up and down the lane.

Women came out with dish towels in their hands.

Men came in from the barns with their sleeves rolled and stood in a ragged line.

By the time Tobias finished flipping open his folder, thirty people were watching him.

"Show me the Alpha's warrant," I said.

Tobias frowned.

"What warrant?"

"A laborer on the lower farms can't be punished in the yard without a written warrant, read aloud in front of three witnesses," I said. "It's the old charter. It's painted on the wall of the grain store."

I pointed.

The faded black letters were still there, forty years old.

The head gardener stepped forward with his cap off.

"Read it to him, if he can't," he said.

"I don't need a lesson from a gardener," Tobias snapped.

"You need a warrant," the gardener said. "Do you have one?"

Tobias did not.

My father never put his name to things that could be read out later.

He gave orders and let Tobias carry them, and I had known that all my life.

"The greenhouse is Dahlia's by the Alpha's word," Tobias said, louder now.

"The greenhouse belongs to the lower farms," I said. "I'm only its keeper."

I looked at the gardener.

He nodded and began to speak without being asked.

"Held in common by the farms. The keeper serves at the workers' pleasure. No Thorburn can give it away."

"That's from the same charter, third line down."

A murmur went through the yard.

Tobias slapped the folder shut.

"Then we'll do it the other way," he said.

He walked straight at Bram and grabbed the front of his coat.
