Chapter 6: Her Mate's Truck

"Step away from my sister," Tobias said.

He pointed at Bram across the hood of the black car.

"That man took her off the lower farms against the Alpha's orders. I'm calling it a kidnapping."

Bram stood still.

He had his hands out from his sides where everyone could see them.

"I left on my mate's word," I said. "It's in the contract your father signed."

"Dahlia called me in tears," Tobias said. "She heard you say harbor, and she said a convict was driving you into the city."

I looked at the pier road behind him.

Dahlia had made her phone call, then, before or after her text.

She had been very busy for a blind girl.

"I'd be glad to explain," I said, "if you want to hear what a laborer and I found out at Pier Nine."

Tobias looked at the ground.

For one second he seemed to want to know.

Then the man beside him stepped forward with his hands in his pale coat pockets and a smile that had once made me feel safe.

"Keeva Thorburn," he said. "We never got to meet properly."

Elias Westmoor.

In my first life, he had kissed my hand under a ribbon arch and promised to build me a glasshouse for a wedding gift.

Then he had torn our engagement contract in half in my sister's honor.

"My mother has told me so much about your greenhouses," he said. "I came to Northvale to see them. I'm sorry it's under these circumstances."

His voice was warm and easy, smooth with practiced charm.

"I'm sorry about your sister's eyes, too," he said. "It's a terrible thing."

"Thank you," I said flatly.

He opened the back door of the black car for me.

"Please. Let me drive you home. A woman of your family shouldn't be hauled around the capital in a farm truck by a man with a record."
