Chapter 8: Not for Sale
On Friday the Luna of the Westmoor Pack walked into my greenhouse with a silver-handled umbrella and eight guards.
She was sixty and straight-backed, and she smelled of expensive cedar.
She stopped under the first row of tomato vines and looked up at the glass roof for a long time.
"You built this irrigation channel yourself," she said.
"With the farm workers," I said. "They know the water better than I do."
"Hm."
She walked the whole length of the greenhouse in silence while the gardener, Bram and I trailed behind.
At the far end she picked a ripe tomato, bit into it, and nodded once.
"Better than anything in my own glasshouses," she said. "Why is a daughter of the Alpha's house growing food in a lower-farm shed?"
"Because the Alpha's house sent me here," I said.
Her eyes moved over me, then over Bram, and came back.
"I heard," she said. "A clause about hitting. A tithe forfeited. A video of the heir getting his hands dirty."
"It's been a busy week," I said.
She almost laughed.
Behind her, Elias stood beside Dahlia, who had come across the yard on his arm.
She wore soft rose-colored wool and her dark glasses.
She smiled warmly at the plants she could not see.
"I'll be direct," the Luna said. "My pack needs a trade route through Northvale's valley, and my son needs a wife who can run a glasshouse."
I knew this speech.
It was the same one, almost word for word.
In my first life, I had thanked her for it.
"You're mated," the Luna went on, "but a contract can be bought out. Northvale's tithe law allows it. I'll pay the Alpha whatever he names, and the route is yours to sign."
