Chapter 13: Diane
Nobody had called me that in twenty-three years.
"Don't," I said.
"It's your name."
"It's the name a woman gave me before she left me with a three-year-old and a drunk."
She set her car keys down on the dresser, very carefully.
"The garden door chimes on my phone," she said. "Cal never thought of that. He never thinks about the house."
"You came home early."
"I came home the minute it chimed. I knew it would be you."
"How?"
"Because you were always the one who opened things."
I held the photograph up between us.
"Say it."
She looked at it for a long time.
Her mouth moved, and for a second I heard the hum, three notes of a song I couldn't have named for a million dollars.
She stopped it.
"Diane Keane," she said. "I was born in the front bedroom of that three-decker. So were you."
My hands didn't shake.
I'd been trained out of it a long time ago.
"Brookline is four miles from that stoop," I said.
"Yes."
"You left us and moved four miles away."
"Hartford first. Then here." She looked at the hatboxes, not at me. "I drove down Dorchester Avenue every Easter."
