The three-decker hadn't changed.
The third step still had the crack.
By a quarter to nine the street was full.
The parish men in their good jackets.
The two nurses, off shift.
The landlady in an actual coat, for once, with her broom left at home.
Neighbors I half remembered leaning out of windows up and down the block, and their kids on the sidewalks with phones.
The woman from the Globe had a photographer with her.
Further back, by a parked car, stood four women in good wool from the luncheon.
And beside them, in sunglasses she didn't need, the roommate from the gate.
She wouldn't look at me.
Cal stood on the sidewalk at the bottom of the steps in his canvas coat.
The captain from Gibson Street stood beside him in a Red Sox jacket, off duty, his hands in his pockets.
My second was across the street, leaning on a lamppost, pretending to read a newspaper.
Roisin and I sat on the top step.
The same step.
Her knees and my knees, the way the photograph had them.
At nine o'clock exactly a cab pulled up at the curb.
