Chapter 30: Arrivals

Jasper reached the airport at four o'clock on the fourteenth, two hours before it was needed.

He told himself it was the traffic. There was no traffic.

He stood at the rail of the arrivals hall with his hands in his coat pockets and watched the board.

The flight from Drego said delayed. Then it said landed. Then for a long time it said nothing at all.

In nine days he had cooked her lamb four times, and burned it three.

He had driven to Mill Lane every night after work and lit the range, and sat in her grandmother's kitchen with a plate that had a chip in the rim.

He had not slept more than four hours at a stretch.

A boy beside him held a sign with a dog drawn on it. A woman wept into her phone.

At ten past six the doors slid open and the passengers came through in a long ragged line.

He knew her by her walk before he saw her face.

She was thinner in the face and browner, and she carried a canvas knife roll under one arm.

A rolling case dragged behind her.

She stopped on the far side of the rail.

Her eyes found him and went still.

"You're early," she said.

"I've been here since four."

"That's very early."

"I know."

She laughed, and he heard that she was close to tears.

She put the knife roll on top of the case, and she came around the end of the rail until there was nothing between them.

"Ask me," she said.

His mouth was dry.

He had written it down in the car. He had memorized it. He found that he could not remember a single word.

"Stay," he said.

"That's not a question."

"Will you stay?"

"Where?"

"With me. In the suite, in the cottage, in the garage, I don't care." He heard his own voice crack. "For the rest of it."

Willa put her palm flat on his chest.

"My grandmother left me a letter," she said. "It told me to say it first. I did. You didn't. So now I'm going to do it again, and you're going to listen."

"I'm listening."

"I'm not staying with you because you paid for my mother. I'm not staying because you lit my range or because you came to the airport. I'm staying because I want you."
