Chapter 20: The Pier

Leandro was already running when I reached the Cattaneo pier in Mr. Cattaneo's car.

He had gone on ahead on foot and cut through the yard, with his hand pressed to the cut on his ribs.

The pier ran out into the black water of Red Hook, lit by a row of yellow lamps.

At the far end, a white launch sat with its engine growling and a single man on the deck.

Adriano had one hand on the throttle and the other on the mooring line.

"Adriano!" Leandro shouted.

Adriano looked back, and then he did something that surprised me.

He didn't cast off.

He picked up a boat hook from the deck and swung it, two-handed, at Leandro's head.

Leandro ducked under it and caught the pole.

He wrenched it out of Adriano's hands and threw it over the side.

Adriano backed away along the side of the launch, toward the gap between it and the pier.

I saw it before he did.

His heel found the edge, and his arms went out, and he went into the harbor backward with a great flat splash.

The black drive went up out of his hand and over the water, and it fell in with a small, ordinary plop.

Then there was silence, and the engine, and the slap of water on the hull.

By then the pier was full.

Mr. Cattaneo's captains had come in four cars behind us.

Two of Grandfather's old men had come in the other direction, called by one text from my phone, and a dozen of the Roselli captains stood behind them in the lamplight.
