By ten in the morning, I had four hundred messages and I had read none of them.

Adriano had called nineteen times.

Fiorella had texted nine times, each one longer and softer than the last. I'm so scared. Please let me explain. I never meant to hurt you.

I put the phone face down on the kitchen table and drank the tea Leandro had made me.

It was the right strength, with one sugar and the bag taken out early.

I had never told him how I took it.

"Where did you learn this?" I asked.

"Two years of watching you order it," he said, and then he looked at the stove.

My phone rang again.

The screen said CATTANEO, SENIOR.

I had met Adriano's father at my own wedding, and in two years he had said perhaps forty words to me.

I answered.

"Mirella." His voice was dry and slow. "I have watched your recording four times."

"I'm sorry it reached you this way."

"Don't be sorry. I am the one who owes you an apology."

I held the phone with both hands.

"My son has made a fool of this house in front of every family in the city. I want the original files, not the copies. I want to know who else touched them."
