Chapter 13: The Envelope
Vasco's POV
I read the envelope on the dock at five in the morning on the twenty-sixth of December, in the cold, with my hands bare.
I had not wanted to read it in the house.
Ines was asleep.
She slept on her stomach with one arm over my side of the bed.
When I got up she'd said something into the pillow in Portuguese.
I had stood there and listened to her breathe for a full minute before I went down.
The envelope held two sheets.
The first was in my father-in-law's handwriting, large, with a flourish on every capital.
"Son-in-law. In the vestry you said, and I quote, 'When the year is up we see whose it is.' My daughter Lidia has asked me to tell you she accepts. She will be home on the anniversary. She is penitent. She is sorry for the scandal and wishes to make it right in the sight of both families. I trust you will honor the terms you set yourself. A.T."
The second was in a round hand I knew.
I had seen it on the back of a menu once, the night I met her, when she wrote her phone number on a napkin.
