Chapter 24: The Second Wedding Night
The house at the end of Clark's Point was dark when we came in, and the harbor was gold with the last of the day.
Avó had gone to bed at the reception, with her cane, and a plate of wedding cake wrapped in a napkin.
She said she was too old for the second act.
The staff were gone.
The hall light was on, and the long stair went up in the dusk.
My husband stood at the bottom of it with his jacket over his arm.
"Last time," he said, "I walked ahead of you."
"I remember."
"This time I'd like to carry you."
"The whole stair?" I asked.
"The whole stair."
"You'll drop me."
"I won't," said Vasco.
He didn't.
He took me up the stair in his arms with my train hanging over his elbow and my face in his neck.
I laughed all the way.
At the top he kicked the bedroom door open.
It was the same room, big and bare, with the dark wooden bed.
But there were photographs on the dresser now.
Our wedding, the first one, in a silver frame.
Avó at the feast.
A Polaroid of me asleep on the sofa with a ledger on my chest.
The lighthouse blinked green through the window and swept across the ceiling.
He set me on my feet.
"Turn around," he said.
I turned.
He found the zipper, and I felt his hands go still on it.
"It sticks," I said.
"Does it?"
"Last time it ripped."
"I remember." He worked it gently, a quarter inch at a time, and it came free. "I owe your mother a dress."
"You owe my mother a great many things."
