Chapter 10: After the Run

The first thing I did when the shift let go of me was knock him flat on his back in the pine needles.

We had run eleven miles through the Barrens as wolves, side by side, under a half moon.

We had crossed the sand roads and the cedar branches and the black fire breaks, and I had not once thought about my sister.

Now the Cold Furnace stood over us, a thirty-foot stack of old brick with an arch at its foot, and the frost was coming down.

Reuben lay beneath me, naked and panting and laughing.

My hands had taken a long time to come back, and I had blamed the cold.

I did not feel the cold now.

"You're hot," he said.

"I've been hot for eleven miles."

I kissed him, hard.

He tasted of woodsmoke and pine, and his arms came around my back and pulled me flat onto his chest.

I felt him stiffen against my stomach.

"Lucinda."

"Don't talk," I said. "I'm going to have my mouth on you, and you're going to let me."

His eyes went black.

I slid down his body.

I kissed his throat and his scarred shoulder and the gray hair across his chest.

I bit his stomach, gently, and he jerked under my mouth.

The needles pricked my knees and my shins, and I did not care.

He was hard and flushed against his belly, thick and heavy, with the swell at the root already full.

I wrapped one hand around the base of him.

I put my mouth on the head.

"God," Reuben said.

I took him in slowly.

He was hot and salty and smooth.

I let my tongue move along the underside while I worked down, an inch at a time.

I took him until I could feel him at the back of my throat.

His hips rose off the ground.

"Lucinda. Lucinda, wait."

I did not wait.

I pulled back and took him deep again, with my hand following my mouth, and I hummed.

The sound he made was not one I had heard from a man.

His hand fell into my hair and gripped it, and the other clawed at the needles beside him.
