Lucinda's POV
The Boom stone is a slab of gray granite as big as a kitchen table, set flat in the gravel yard behind the pump house.
For a hundred years every Flooding has ended with a speech from it.
Tonight three hundred wolves stood around it in a ring, with torches, and the moon came up red over their heads.
Reuben held my hand through the gate and across the gravel.
Then he let it go, and stopped at the edge of the torchlight, inside the dike, where no Stray had ever stood.
I walked on alone.
Brant sat in the Alpha's chair at the far side, a plain cedar chair with arms, in his tan coat and a clean shirt.
At his boots, on the gravel, with her knees drawn up, sat my sister.
She had on a gray wool coat that did not button anymore.
She was crying without a sound, and she would not lift her head.
The Pull had her.
She could not stand until the moon set.
The oldest Boom Wife stepped forward, in her black skirt, and lifted her stick.
