Chapter 15: The Pump House

The pump house was the warmest room on the Sooy bog in December, and I had pictured him in it all week.

My father built it of cinder block in 1991, around a big diesel engine.

When the winter flood was rising, the engine ran day and night, and the concrete floor shook under your boots.

Reuben lay on his back on the wool blanket in front of it with his flannel open and his hands behind his head.

I stood over him in my bare feet and unzipped my jeans.

"The flood needs two more inches before the ice sets," I said. "I'm meant to be checking the gauge."

"Check it."

"I will. After."

I stepped out of my jeans and my underwear and left them on the pump casing.

The engine thudded in the floor and up my legs.

He looked up the length of me, and his gray eyes went dark in the lamp.

"Come here," he said.

I knelt astride his chest and pulled my sweater over my head.

He sat up under me and put his mouth on my breast, and the heat of it went straight down my spine.

He sucked, and licked, and caught my nipple lightly in his teeth.

I tangled both hands in his hair and held him there.

"More," I said. "The other one."

He gave it to me, slow, with his hand spread at the small of my back and the engine shuddering through us both.

I heard myself whimper.

"Where do you want me?" he said against my skin.

"You know where."

I did.

I knelt over his face with one knee on either side of his head.

I reached up and caught the old iron pipe that ran along the ceiling.

It was warm from the engine.

I held it with both hands, and I lowered myself until I felt his breath on me.

"Lucinda," he said, against my thigh. "Sit."

I sat.

His mouth closed on me, hot and wet, and I cried out so loudly that the sound bounced off the block walls.

He licked me slowly, one long stroke from my entrance to my clit.

Then he found the little hard point of it with the flat of his tongue and stayed there.

My knees gave a little.

His hands came up and gripped my thighs and held me down on him.

"Oh God," I said. "Oh, don't stop."
