Chapter 20: News from the Dike

Reuben was kneeling on his kitchen floor with his face against my stomach when my mother's horn went off in the yard.

I sat on the edge of the counter in his flannel shirt and nothing else, with my heels hooked behind his back.

His mouth moved over the small curve below my navel.

"Don't," I said.

"I'm not doing anything."

"You're doing a great deal."

"I'm saying good morning," he said.

"To whom?"

"To both of you."

My throat went tight and strange.

I threaded my fingers into his hair, and he turned his head and kissed the inside of my thigh, once, slowly, high up.

The horn blew again.

"I'll kill her," I said.

"She brought pie."

"She would."

I slid down off the counter into his arms and kissed him, hard, and tasted coffee and the sleep still in his mouth.

He pulled the shirt closed over me with both hands, and buttoned it at the throat, and looked very pleased with himself.

My mother stood on the porch with her arms folded and a pie in a dish towel.

It was the nineteenth of December, bitter and bright, and the smell of snow hung over the pines.

She looked at me, in his shirt, in the doorway, with my hair loose.

"You've got your boots on the wrong feet," she said.
