Chapter 14: Rule One
Niall carried nothing into Harbor House, because Maeve's father had told him twice he could walk.
The old man took the lobby one step at a time, with a hand on Niall's forearm.
The day nurse at the desk looked up and started to smile, and then she saw his face and stopped.
"Mr. Prendergast. We were so worried."
"I want my own room," he said. "And I want my daughter to sign the book."
Maeve laid the lawyer's papers on the desk.
She did it quietly, and Niall watched the nurse read the first page and then the second.
"This names you," the nurse said.
"It does."
"Then you decide who signs him out, Ms. Prendergast. Nobody else." The nurse pulled a form from a drawer. "I'll make a note in his file today."
Maeve's shoulders dropped half an inch.
Niall noticed it, because he had been watching her shoulders since the church.
When the old man was settled in his chair by the sunroom window, asleep with his tea untouched, Maeve walked out to the corridor and leaned on the wall.
"Thank you," she said. "For the truck. For all night in it."
"You don't need to thank me."
"I do. You're good at this. You were good to your father at the end, and you were good to every family on that ward." She rubbed her eyes with the heel of her hand. "I know it's how you are. You don't have to keep being kind to me."
Niall stood very still.
She meant it as a gift, he could see that.
She was letting him off.
"Maeve."
"It's fine."
"It isn't kindness." He kept his voice low. "I've walked past a lot of families in that ward. I never once wanted to be in the room."
She looked up.
"I'm not here because you're sad. I'm here because I'd rather be here than anywhere else."
