Chapter 5: Name a Number
Waylon was sitting on the front steps of her building when Maeve came home on Friday evening.
He had changed into a suit, and he had a manila envelope on his knee.
She walked past him and put her key in the lock.
"Maeve. Five minutes."
"You have three, and you're saying them out here."
He stood up and brushed off the back of his trousers.
He looked tired, and a little frightened, and for a moment he looked like the man who had once cried in a hospital garage with engine oil on his knees.
That man was ten years gone.
"Your mother called me," he said.
"I'm sure she did."
"She says you won't come Saturday."
"She's wrong. I haven't said anything."
His shoulders came down an inch.
"Then you're coming?"
"I didn't say that either."
"Name a number," Waylon said.
He held out the envelope.
Inside was a check, already made out to her, for twenty thousand dollars.
Maeve looked at it for a while.
"What's this for?"
"For the inconvenience. For Saturday. For the loans." He said the last part fast. "I know you paid it off, and I'm not an animal. I'll pay you back. Tell me how much."
"A hundred and sixty-one thousand, four hundred."
His mouth moved.
"That's the total, with interest," she said. "I have the statements. You never asked what it was."
"I thought it was less."
"I know you did."
"I can't give you that tonight."
"No, you can't."
He put the check back in the envelope, and he kept his eyes on it.
