Chapter 8: Monday

For a moment the only sound in the ballroom was Alexis breathing.

The founder put his glass down very slowly. "Monday," he said. "What happens on Monday?"

Alexis looked at Waylon.

Waylon looked at the tablecloth.

"The announcement," Alexis said. Her voice shook. "After the announcement on Monday, Mom said it would be safe, because then the bank couldn't..."

"Alexis." Their mother was on her feet, and her voice cut across the room. "That's enough. You're overwrought."

Alexis stopped.

Maeve watched her mother's hands.

They were gripping the back of her chair so hard the knuckles had gone white.

"What would be safe?" the founder asked.

Nobody answered.

He turned his heavy white head toward Waylon.

"You told me your marriage was solid. You told me in my own office, in March, and I put my name on that."

"Sir, it's a family misunderstanding."

"Your wife has just handed me a receipt for your education." He tapped the paper. "And your sister-in-law has just told a hundred and forty people she's been waiting for Monday."

"Sir."

"I'm not an unkind man, Waylon. But I promote people who tell me the truth when it costs them." He pushed back his chair. "My office. Monday, nine o'clock. The announcement is on hold until then."

He did not shout.

It would have been easier on Waylon if he had.

Then the founder turned to Maeve, his expression softening with respect.
