Chapter 15: The Price of a Sister

I read the two texts again and then held the phone out over Thatcher's face.

He was awake before I'd finished, squinting at the screen.

He read them twice.

Then he sat up so fast the bed shrieked.

"I'm going to Pawtucket."

"And do what? Knock on his door at three in the morning and tell him you know?"

"Yes."

"He'd smile and offer you coffee. Then he'd know we know." I put the phone face down on the blanket. "And Dena would be the one in the house with him."

He sat on the edge of the narrow bed with his elbows on his knees.

The radiator ticked.

"So we go to the police," he said.

"With what? A policy? Half the fathers in Rhode Island have one. A voice I heard in a life that didn't happen?"

He didn't answer.

I pulled the blanket around my shoulders.

"I'm going to see her," I said. "Tomorrow. On her shift."

At four the next afternoon, the diner bell stuck halfway when I pushed through it.

The cook looked up from the grill.

"The one I should've hired," he said. "Coffee?"

"Please."

He poured it himself and slid it down the counter.

Then he looked at the back booth and went back to his burgers without a word.

Dena was sitting there alone in her pink uniform with a rag in her hand, not wiping anything.

I sat down across from her.

"I'll get you out," I said.

She looked up.

"I'll get you out of that house, and I'll make sure he never touches that money or you. I'll keep you alive, Dena."

She laughed, short and ugly.

"With what? Your fourteen dollars an hour?"

"With everything I've got. Which is more than you think."
