The sign crew was already on the sidewalk when I got there at nine, with a lift truck and a clipboard.
Maxwell walked beside me with two coffees, and he hadn't slept either.
He handed me mine without a word. It was made exactly right.
"The bank wants an answer on the six point nine," I said. "Meridian Row LLC. Did you recognize the name?"
"It's one of Preston's shells. The second account at Redfern." He kept his eyes on the crew. "He sent it back, Hazel. He emptied it into the company on his way out."
"Why would he?"
"Because a wire back to the company is a confession he can call a repayment," Maxwell said. "His lawyer will say so by noon."
"Then I confirm it, and I send it to the lawyer's own inbox with the date on it."
"That's the answer I'd have given."
I had confirmed it on my phone in the cab on the way over, and I felt lighter for it.
Across the plaza, a green sedan sat in the loading zone with its hazard lights on.
Winifred was in the driver's seat with the window down, eating a doughnut.
"You can't park there," I said.
"Watch me," she said. "I'm seventy-nine."
Brooke stood on the curb beside the car, in a hospital lanyard, holding a paper bag of doughnuts for the crew.
She didn't say anything when I came up. She held out the bag, and I took a plain one.
It was the first thing either of us had passed the other since the bread.
"Your father texted," she said. "He was at his meeting at seven. He took a picture of the chairs."
