Chapter 8: Live

By Tuesday morning the story had been picked up by three more sites.

By noon a producer from a network breakfast show had called Winifred's landline.

"They want both sides," I told Maxwell. "Live. Thursday. Preston and Brooke are already booked as the happy couple."

"No," he said.

"I'm going."

"You'll be set up. They'll ask about your feelings, and he'll say you're unwell."

"Then I'll be unwell on television," I said. "It's the only room he can't lock me out of."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Then you don't say anything you can't prove," he said. "One question. Ask it flat."

On Thursday I sat in the green room in a cream blazer and no jewelry.

The pearls were at home on Winifred's dresser.

Preston and Brooke came in with a publicist.

He held her hand, and he looked at me with soft, sorry eyes.

"Hazel," he said. "I'm glad you came. Whatever happens in there, I want you to know I forgive you."

"For what?"

"For all of this."

Brooke said nothing at all.

She had a new haircut, and a bracelet I hadn't seen, and a bruise-colored shadow under each eye that makeup hadn't covered.

The three of us were walked onto the set and seated on a white couch in front of two cameras.

The host was a bright, careful woman with a folder in her lap.

"We're here with the Lyle Group's newlyweds," she said to the lens. "And with Hazel Heathcote, the bride's sister and the groom's former fiancée. Hazel, I think viewers are curious about how this happened."
