Chapter 10: Her Rule
Thea's POV
Torin came back at nine, as his note had promised, and he did not come in.
He stood in the hall with his hands in his pockets and said, "I found something in Cora's desk."
"Tell me."
"My pen. And a page cut out of the pack's claims book. It's about us, and about the boathouse, and I need to tell you what it says." He looked at the carpet. "I want to do it right. Not in a hallway the day before the hearing."
"That's not an answer."
"I know."
I studied him.
I had spent five years being lied to, and I knew what it looked like when someone was trying not to.
This was the other thing, a man afraid of hurting me.
"After the hearing," I said.
"After the hearing."
He nodded, and he went to leave, and I didn't let him.
The hearing was in the morning.
My investigator had taken Arlo next door for pizza and a movie, with a promise that he'd bring him back at ten, then amended it with a look at me to "whenever."
My phone showed the lab contact's message about the lighthouse stamp.
It was a match.
Everything was in place.
I stood in the doorway and let myself look at Torin.
He was tall in the corridor light, with the gold flecks in his dark eyes, and his shirt buttoned to the top.
I was so tired of being careful.
"Rule one," I said.
"I know. I'm leaving."
"Arlo's next door. It's after bedtime. The rule says you leave before bedtime, and bedtime's over."
His eyes lifted.
"Thea."
"I'm telling you I'm tired of keeping it."
