Chapter 13: The Lumberyard
My sister came on Sunday with a casserole in our mother's blue dish.
"Chicken and rice," she said on the doorstep. "It's the only thing I trust to survive a glass house."
She stepped into the hall and looked up at the ceiling, which was a long way up.
"So this is where the money lives."
"The money lives at the bank," I said. "This is where Milo lives."
"Mm-hm."
I took the dish from her, and from the living room I heard my son's voice, very serious.
"No. Left."
We stopped in the doorway.
Timothy sat on the rug in his suit trousers and a white shirt with the cuffs undone, holding Biscuit in both hands.
Milo knelt in front of him, small and stern.
"You say good morning to the ear first," Milo said. "The left ear. The right ear is shy."
"It's the afternoon."
"Biscuit doesn't know."
Timothy bent his head toward the worn gray rabbit.
"Good morning, Biscuit," he said, to the left ear.
"Now you shake."
"Shake what?"
"His foot. Gently." Milo steered Timothy's big hand to a stitched paw. "He's been with me since I was born. He has to know you're staying."
Timothy's hand went still.
"I'm staying," he told the rabbit.
My sister put her fingers over her mouth.
"He's on the floor," she whispered. "In that shirt."
"I know."
"You never said it was like this."
"I didn't know it was like this."
Her phone rang, and she stepped into the hall to answer it.
She came back white.
"That was my husband. He's at the yard, and the bank called him." She looked at me, then at the rug. "The note is gone. Paid in full, wired Friday morning."
"What?"
"The whole loan, Rose. Four hundred and ten thousand dollars. The man at the bank wouldn't say who."
