Chapter 16: The Column

Timothy was already dressed when I came downstairs, with a phone at each ear.

He put one down when he saw me.

"The paper has the page," he said. "The exact page. I wrote those terms on a legal pad the night before the courthouse, and it's been in my office desk ever since."

"Not here."

"Not here. Downtown, in the drawer." His jaw moved. "Three people were in that office on Friday. My assistant, my mother, and Gwen."

I thought about Gwen's silver key with the little enamel flower.

I thought about her hand over her mouth in my kitchen.

"What do we do?"

"You and Milo go to the suite at the Marlowe under a different name until this passes. I'll have two men on the door." He buttoned his cuff. "Today."

"The Marlowe."

"It's the only hotel I own with a back entrance."

"Timothy." I almost laughed. "Of all the hotels."

He heard it a moment after I did, and for a second his mouth moved in something that wasn't quite a smile.

"Anywhere but there," he said. "Pick one."

"I'm not hiding."

"Rosemary."

"I have patients tomorrow. Milo has clinic on Wednesday. If I go into a hotel under a fake name, then every word of that column is true and I'm ashamed of it."

"You'd be safe."

"I'd be a woman who was bought and is hiding about it."

He looked at me for a while.

Then he reached out and tipped my chin up toward the window with two fingers, and looked at my face in the morning light.

"You didn't sleep."

"Neither did you."

His thumb rested at the corner of my jaw, and I wanted, badly and stupidly, to lean into it.
