Chapter 5: The Courthouse

Timothy's POV

I had read the terms to myself in the car, and I knew them by heart before we reached the courthouse.

Rosemary walked beside me in a navy coat two sizes too big.

Her sister followed with Milo on her hip.

Milo held his rabbit by the neck and studied the marble floor.

Her left hand was bare.

She had taken off my brother's ring in the car, wrapped it in a tissue, and put it in her coat pocket without a word.

I wanted to say something about that.

I said, "We have twenty minutes before the judge."

"I know."

"Then I'll read you the terms."

We stood by a window in the corridor while her sister took Milo to look at a fish tank in the lobby.

"Rule one," I said. "No feelings. This is a plan for a sick child. I won't pretend it's anything else, and neither will you."

She nodded.

"Rule two. We share a bed only on the days the doctor names. The rest of the time you and Milo have the guest wing, and I won't cross the hall."

Something moved at the corner of her mouth.

"Rule three. Once the doctor confirms a pregnancy, we sleep in separate rooms until the baby comes."

"Fine."

"Rule four. When Milo is cured, we part, and the baby stays with both of us. I'll cover every cent of the treatment, and I don't want to hear a thank-you for it. You can say it to Milo's doctor."

"That's the whole list?"

"That's the list."
