Chapter 10: Daddy and Me
Teddy fell asleep on Bernice's sofa with his head on the rabbit.
Bernice went into the kitchen and ran the water loudly, which was her way of leaving two people alone.
Luke sat across from me at the little dining table.
Neither of us had touched the tea.
Through the front window, the white car still sat at the curb with its lights off.
"You went to her first," I said.
I had not planned to say it tonight.
It had been in my chest since Saturday, and it came out on its own.
Luke didn't flinch.
"I know."
"Teddy's lips were going gray, Luke. I held him up to you with both arms, and you walked past us."
"I know."
"I told myself you were in shock." I kept my voice low. "I told myself a doctor's brain freezes sometimes. But you didn't freeze. You looked at my face and his hand, and then you chose."
"I chose wrong."
"Why?"
He rubbed his face with both hands.
"Because she was crying," he said. "Because I've spent nine months learning how to make her stop crying, and I didn't think. That's the worst of it. I didn't think at all."
"That isn't an answer."
"It's the only true one I have." His eyes were wet. "When I saw you, I thought, Mom's hurt, and she's here, and she's loud, and Shelby's the one who needs me. You've always been strong. You never ask for anything. You never needed me to come first."
"I'm your mother," I said. "I'm allowed to need you."
He bent his head.
"I know that now."
The refrigerator hummed.
Down the hall Bernice turned the water off.
