Chapter 21: The Only Language He Has
Luke carried his old duffel bag up my porch steps on Saturday morning and set down three boxes beside it.
"I'm staying the summer," he said. "If you'll have me."
"It's your room."
"It's your house."
"Then I'm saying you can stay in it."
He nodded, and for a minute neither of us knew where to put our hands.
Teddy came out on the porch in his socks, saw the boxes, and said, "Are those books?"
"Mostly."
"Can I carry one?"
"The light one," Luke said, and handed him a box of rolled-up towels.
My seven-year-old walked it into the house with great care and returned for another.
I watched Luke watch him.
"I have something for you," he said.
He took an envelope out of his jacket.
Inside were two sheets of paper, both folded in thirds.
The first was a letter on hospital letterhead, signed by the administrator, addressed to him.
I read the first line twice.
"A formal reprimand," I said. "For Saturday."
"I asked for it. They didn't want to write one."
"Luke."
"It stays in my file. If a hospital ever looks at me for a job, it will be the first page they read." He said it flatly. "I'd rather they ask me about it than not know."
The second sheet was a receipt from the billing office.
I did not understand it at first, and then I saw the number, and the word PAID.
It covered the whole of Teddy's emergency bill and mine.
"That's your savings."
"It was going to be a down payment on something."
