Chapter 8: Gunther's Card
"It's the steam," I said to his reflection.
"It's not the steam."
He set the comb on the sink and turned me around on the lid by the shoulders.
He crouched in front of me in his towel.
"You slept in your car two nights," he said. "And you've been standing at my father's fryer for a month saying nothing."
"I'm not saying nothing. I'm saying cod."
"Wrobel," he said.
"I'm fine, Hartmann."
He kissed my forehead, once, hard, and held his mouth there.
Neither of us said another word about it.
I fell asleep in his bed that night for the first time, in his T-shirt, with his arm over my ribs.
On Tuesday my mother came to the tavern at two in the afternoon with a tray of pierogi.
The lunch rush was over.
The dining room was empty except for the bowling team's usual table, and Gerry was behind the bar rubbing his knee.
She walked into the kitchen in her yellow cardigan and set the tray on my prep table.
