Chapter 11: Ask Your Mother
The Ranger's hood was up in my parents' driveway, and all I could see of Matti was the lower half of him.
It was seven in the morning, and the grass was white with frost.
I had brought two coffees from the gas station on London Road, and I held one of them out at arm's length.
"It's black," I said. "I didn't know if you still..."
"Still."
He slid out from under the hood with a wrench in one hand and grease on his wrist.
He took the cup and drank half of it standing there, and the steam went across his face.
"You're up early," he said.
"I didn't sleep."
"Me neither."
His eyes went to my left wrist, where the bite had gone purple under my sleeve.
I pulled my cuff down over it.
"I'm breaking my own rule," I said.
"Which one?"
"The first one."
He set the wrench on the fender and put the cup down beside it.
"Okay," he said.
"Did you send me money?"
He didn't move.
"After you left. Did you ever send me any money?"
