Chapter 22: The Tub
"She doesn't get to set a place for you," I said.
I stood in my bathroom doorway on Saturday night in my clinic scrubs, with kennel on my sleeves and my braid coming down.
I was ready to fight with anything in the room.
"It's a note on a windshield," Matti said. "It's a plate."
"It's a plate she decided on."
"She asked."
"She didn't ask. She wrote it down and ran," I said.
He sat on the edge of the old claw-foot tub with his sleeves rolled, running the water with one hand.
The tub was cast iron, six feet long, bolted to the floor of a bathroom that was too small for it.
The landlord had put it in during the seventies, and it was the only reason I'd signed my lease.
Steam was already climbing the mirror.
"I'm going," Matti said. "I'd like you to come. But I'm going, and it's my dad's table."
"You're going because she set a plate?"
"I'm going because my father asked me."
"You'd sit across from her and eat her stuffing," I said.
"I'd sit across from her and eat my father's stuffing," he said, "and she can watch me do it."
I opened my mouth to say something cutting and found I had nothing.
He reached over, and with his wet hand he took my chin and turned my face to his.
"Come here," he said.
"I'm filthy."
"I know."
"I smell like a dog," I said.
"You smell like four dogs. Come here, Kaisa."
I came.
He undressed me slowly, with his wet fingers, button by button on the scrub top, and he kissed every piece of skin he uncovered.
