Chapter 26: Fog
The guards set me down on the white circle.
They let go of my arms and stepped back into the dark.
Eighteen thousand faces were a wall of black past the candles.
I could hear them breathing.
Zane came toward me with his arms open.
"Ramona Beale, everybody," he said. "My kiddo."
The arena applauded.
It was warm, loving applause, the kind you give a lost dog that finally came home.
I looked down into the front row.
Ivo was on his feet.
Two guards stood in front of him, and he was looking over their heads at me, his eyes gone red.
Augustin had one hand on his son's arm.
The housekeeper had one hand in her bag.
"Security found her in our air conditioning tonight," Zane told the crowd, sad and gentle. "Doing God knows what. This is what I've been trying to tell you, folks. She's not well."
People murmured.
Somebody up in the dark called, "We love you, Ramona!"
It made my skin crawl worse than any pest.
Zane put the microphone in front of my face.
