Chapter 29: Her Company
I didn't answer right away.
I turned the key and started my truck.
"Seatbelt," I said.
He put it on, too tired to argue.
I drove out of the garage into the bright December noon.
I didn't go toward the highway and his motel.
I went north.
Past the hospital where Abuelo died.
Past the yard on San Bernardo with the excavators lined up.
Out to Mines Road, where the warehouse stood finished against the sky with my beam at the top and the crew's names on it.
I parked in front of it.
"There," I said.
He looked at the building.
"You poured the slab under that," I said. "On your knees. In the sun. With thirty people who'd decided to hate you."
"Two inches."
"Two inches." I took his hand.
"And after the slab, you stayed. Through all of it, you stayed."
He laughed, wet.
"You asked me where you belong," I said.
"You belong with the people who watched you stay. My father set a third bowl, Mateo."
"He set it before he even talked to you."
He held my hand against his mouth for a long time.
He didn't say anything.
He didn't have to.
